Bonjour • Hello
Acclaimed portrait and fashion photographer, filmmaker, and award-winning writer Brian-Michel LaRue established his reputation while working a young lawyer and journalist with the French-language arm of the CBC/Radio-Canada network. He spent those years bettering his photo techniques and theoretical approach. A side job writing sex advice for readers over at VICE, led him to begin writing as a full time job — and now we're on his fifth book nearing completion, with work on his next already beginning. Possessing an uncanny ability to disarm both subjects and viewers alike with his alluringly powerful images and words, he seeks to capture the beautiful contradictions of human experience.
(Okay, now for an explanation in the first person voice.)
My work - photography, filmmaking/video, and writing - suggests a story that happened before the shot and a story that hasn’t happened yet. There’s a sense of melancholy. There's sense of desire. Lee Friedlander's work from the ’70s is a good example. When it comes together it puts two contradictory layers in a photograph or a film or in a story: you’re both adoring it and not repulsed by it — or more simply: intimacy and detachment.
In whatever visual medium I'm working with, I’m not recording what is really happening, but it’s something like what the brain is seeing late at night, particularly if you’re drunk, tired, or even focused and excited. Between 3 and 4 in the morning when desperation sets in, when you see all the anticipation of going out starting to fade, the masks drop and everybody realizes the night is not going to be everything they were hoping for. That's where a really good story lies, just waiting to be told visually. That's what I like to capture and create.
I call it desiderative art.
As a writer, I've had essays and articles printed (literally and digitally) in myriad publications; I've also written two books in French sold and distributed mainly in Québec and France, am finishing up a two books of poetry on my time in the Middle East over the past few years, and I've finished my fifth book on what every writer craves: a dark study of people.
As a filmmaker, I have worked with the English-language CBC, French-language Radio-Canada/ARTV/Canal+ as well as TV5Québec and TV5Monde. I have also independently produced, written, and directed music videos, commercial advertisements, documentaries, short films, interviews, news pieces, and creative content videos.
In the past I have worked through agents and representation, though I'm finding that process to be less organic and spontaneous. I'm restructuring my business and creative activities in order to be closer to my subjects and to reach a wider ranger of creatives.
That said, I'm represented legally by DLA Piper LLP and by BerlinRosen for public relations purposes.
